What a fantastic 10 days of diving, snorkelling (we had two very keen snorkelers onboard) and great company. We were lucky enough to see everything from silver tip sharks down to the tiniest of pygmy seahorses, plus all the amazing creatures in-between, including 4 sargassum frogfish and the shy and elusive tube guardian crab which we found after much searching!
Everyone had their own “best” dive of the trip but for me it was dive one at Barracuda Point at Mary Island. The current was strong and we were rewarded with loads of baby grey reef sharks cruising the reef, plus an incredible school of barracuda and jacks. In amongst this were also the biggest tunas I have seen for a long time, they were hunting the schools of fusiliers. We hooked in with our reef hooks and just enjoyed the show!
Other stand out favourites were Mbulo Caves, who doesn’t like swimming around in this stunning labyrinth of caves and swim thrus, looking up at the overhanging jungle above and light beams shinning down? Kicha was its usual totally stunning self, it was so good we dived there two days in a row. The bat fish (spadefish) were so friendly and posed for photographers, and the hard coral gardens were out of this world! Not to mention the schools of snapper, jacks and barracudas swirling around. Both sides of Tanavula Point did not disappoint either and we were blown away by the beautiful colours and amounts of soft corals and gorgonian fans on both of these dives. The sheer numbers of fish were impressive too! There were too many great dives to name them all.
Although we had rain some days we were able to visit some villages to look at the artwork produced by the famous wood carvers of Marovo Lagoon and to visit Karumolun village to see some traditional singing and dancing, this was an incredible experience.
A big thank you to Tina, Oli, Dani, Sean and all of the crew of the Bilikiki for taking such great care of us all. Also I’d like to say a big thank you to all of the other guests onboard, it was wonderful to meet you and for the people I already knew it was great to see you again. I hope we can all dive together again someday soon.
Cheers,
Kellie Oldfield
